Abstract:   The Top500, Green500 and the Energy Efficient HPC Working Group have developed a methodology for measuring power while running a workload, such as High Perfomance Linpack (HPL). The methodology defines three quality levels; essentially a “good”, “better”, “best” with Level 3 having the finest granularity of measurement.
This BoF will provide a forum for sites like the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Leibniz Supercomputing Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Indian Center for the Development of Advanced Computing to describe their experiences with higher-quality measurements. For example, some recent measurements were done by the CSCS, using two different levels while running HPL on Piz Daint supercomputer. A higher-quality methodology (Level 3) resulted in 3,186 Mflops/W while the lower-quality methodology (Level 1) yielded 3,864 Mflops/W.
The BoF will also encourage broader evaluation and feedback on the latest methodology.
