|
The goal of the Human Brain Project (HBP) is to pull together all our existing knowledge about the human brain and to reconstruct the brain, piece by piece, in supercomputer-based models and simulations. These models offer the prospect of a new understanding of the human brain and its diseases and of completely new computing and robotic technologies. In January 2013 the European Commission announced funding this endeavor in form of an FET Flagship project and on 1 October 2013 the project comprised of more than 80 European and international research institutions started operations. The series of yearly sessions at ISC aims at presenting the challenge and the progress and to provide a platform for engaging the community of High Performance Computing and beyond. This year we will report on the first months of the project and shed some light on the core HPC applications enabling large-scale neural simulations. It will present a particular way of using custom built digital hardware for real-time simulations of neural tissue and conclude with a panel discussion.
