In the past cluster design was driven by technology: selecting a CPU, interconnect and designing the network topology were key consideration factors This led to homogeneous systems with classical architectures comparable to the MPP systems of the 90s. Today key design factors are the applications or the application mix supposed to run on the system. A profound understanding of application characteristics as well as matching technologies are essential to design optimal systems for the given task. Furthermore the core technology is expanding to storage, parallel filesystems, visualization, pre- & post-processing, just to name more common requirements. On top of that, more and more environmental parameters are influencing the design process: power consumption, cooling technology, machine room restrictions, all the way up to energy efficiency, PUE (power usage effectiveness) and TCO (total cost of ownership) considerations. The talk is going to give an overview of today’s design space in advance clustering techniques, best practice approaches for more common system solutions as well as an outlook of upcoming technology trends.
