Abstract:   According to Cisco’s VNI forecast, 2017 will be the year in which the global annual IP traffic surpasses a zettabyte, with more than 120 exabytes of IP traffic per month. The impact on data centers is huge as they transition to Open Platform and open standards, including Software Defined Networks (SDN), Open Ethernet and Open Compute Project.
This presentation reports on recent developments in integrated optical interconnects based upon silicon photonics which offer new dimensions of scalability for data centers networks. New, low-power, high-speed modulation and detection techniques, for 28 GHz and higher, match the port bandwidth of the fastest switching chips, enabling low latency, end-to-end pipes. On chip wavelength division multiplexing combines many parallel electrical channels onto a single strand of fiber. A single silicon photonics chip can transmit 100 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s or even a terabit per second for a distance of 2 km, long enough for even the largest data centers.
