Abstract:   We present two new techniques for high-performance parallel scientific software. The coalesced communication design pattern allows for a structured way to improve the communication performance by coalescencing multiple communication needs with two communication management components. We apply the design pattern to several simulations of a lattice-Boltzmann blood flow solver with streaming visualisation which engenders a reduction in the communication overhead of approximately 40%. In addition we present a weighted decomposition technique to improve the calculation load balance in lattice-Boltzmann simulation, and test its effect on the scalability and communication overhead.
