Abstract:   What is the purpose of an exascale supercomputer? One is to achieve societal benefits in their applications. Another is to be a leading edge IT infrastructure that would lead the technical advances of the overall IT industry. We claim that recent trends in both are propelling the overall supercomputing industry in an accelerated fashion, such as applications in disaster prevention, medicine, as well as manufacturing, as well as the use of the advanced bleeding edge devices as well as software scalable to millions of CPUs, and the recent aim of convergence with Big Data. As such it is becoming increasingly important to consider the supercomputing towards exascale to be the leadership area in the overall IT Ecosystem, and not as a separate technological sphere. We introduce some of the advances we are considering for TSUBAME3.0 to be deployed in early 2016 and how it will serve such a leadership role.
