Abstract:   Quantum annealing holds the promise to return better solutions to hard combinatorial optimization problems than classical algorithms. We report on a series of benchmark experiments we performed with the D-Wave Two quantum annealer. These experiments were designed to assess to what degree the hardware is capable of competing with the fastest known classical solvers. We present evidence that quantum tunneling plays a functional role in how the D-Wave Two processor finds solutions. We conclude with lessons for future designs of quantum optimization hardware.
