Abstract:   This presentation will highlight that ROI (return on investment) is the most critical metric when making economic decisions regarding expensive HPC environments. ROI relates in particular to two very costly aspects: getting the maximum from the resources in a cluster (i.e. top utilization for hardware as well as application software licenses) and enabling end users to get their results more quickly (increased productivity). We will be discussing concrete scenarios which demonstrate how the right choice and usage of one of the key components in an HPC environment, namely the workload and resource management software layer, can drastically improve ROI by boosting utilization as well as productivity. We will furthermore showcase that best-of-breed software in the workload and resource management space paired with appropriate services to ensure optimal usage may come at a cost but will easily offset any investment by the leverage of much increased ROI for vastly more expensive HPC environment components such as servers, application software licenses and human capital.
