Prof. Dr. Barbara Chapman

Professor of Computer Science, Center for Advanced Computing & Data Systems, University of Houston

Barbara Chapman is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Houston, where she designs parallel programming interfaces, explores enhancements to compiler and runtime technology, and creates tool support for parallel application development. She has contributed to the development of OpenMP, a high-level shared memory parallel programming model and her group has developed the first reference implementation for OpenSHMEM, intended to become a portable library-based API for parallel programming based upon the PGAS model. Dr. Chapman has also applied techniques from high performance computing in order to support high-end embedded systems design, and considers the challenges posed by an increasingly diverse set of architectures. Her group has developed OpenUH, a freely-available Open64-based compiler that demonstrates many of her research ideas. Dr. Chapman has been engaged in teaching and research on parallel programming languages, and their implementation for more than 15 years.
