Dr. Suryachandra A. Rao

Senior Scientist, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology

Dr. Suryachandra A. Rao is a senior scientist in the field of Earth Sciences and have major contribution in Atmospheric & Ocean modeling and coupled Ocean-Atmosphere modeling. At present, he is working at Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, India as the Chief Program Scientist of the ‘Seasonal & Extended Range Prediction (SERP) of Monsoon” program and the “High Performance Computing System (HPCS)” program. He is also the Project Director (SERP) and the Coordinator of the “Monsoon Mission”, an ambitious mission  mode project of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India to enhance the prediction skill of Monsoon weather and climate. He has been instrumental in installation of India’s fastest Super-Computer “AADITYA” at IITM, Pune in record time of about 5 months. This Super-computer’s peak performance is about 790 Terra-Floaps and a Storage capacity of 6 Peta-Bytes. He has significant contribution in monsoon prediction, especially for seasonal prediction of SW (summer) monsoon using the state of the art coupled model with a very high resolution of T382 (~38 km). He received his M.Sc., M. Tech. and Ph.D. degrees from Andhra University (in 1991, 1994 and 1998 respectively). Later on, he joined Institute of Marine Affairs, Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies (1998-99) as a Senior Research Officer, followed by Frontier Research System for Global Change, Tokyo, Japan (1999-2002) as a Post-doctoral researcher and Frontier Research Center for Global Change, Yokohama, Japan (Prev. FRSGC) (2003-2007) as a Research Scientist. Then, he joined IITM, Pune in 2008. He has published a large number of research papers in International journals to his credit, so far the count is 47 papers in peer reviewed reputed journals. He has provided leadership services in various National & International forum. For his contributions, he has been awarded with “Certificate of Merit Award” by Ministry of Earth Science, Govt. of India for Outstanding Scientific contribution  (in 2010) ; Silver Jubilee Award of IITM for Best Research paper as well as guide of the Best Student Paper Award (in 2013) and Co-author of IMS Award in 2014. Earlier he received several Academic Awards like University Gold Medal from Andhra University; He has been a guide to several Ph.D. students and has a vast teaching experience. He is a member of the high level Committee for the implementation of “HPC infra-structure” in MoES and member of several national and International Committees.
