Dr. George Beckett

Deputy Director, iVEC

Beckett is the Deputy Director of iVEC and the leader of its Supercomputing Team. His role focuses on promoting uptake of iVEC supercomputing facilities, developing the computational-research community in Western Australia, and growing iVEC's capabilities to support world-class communities in radio astronomy and geosciences. Beckett joined iVEC in August 2012, having previously worked for 10 years at EPCC -- the leading European, high performance computing centre in Edinburgh, Scotland. During his time at EPCC, Beckett managed a number of high-profile, international projects including being a team leader on the DEISA infrastructure and overall project manager for the middleware program on the International Lattice Data Grid. His academic background is in computational mathematics: he has an Honours Degree in Mathematics from New College, Oxford and a Ph.D. in Computation Mathematics from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. Beckett has significant experience of a range of scientific-computing areas, include: petascale computing, accelerator programming, medical imaging, (petroleum) reservoir modelling, image compression, numerical linear algebra, grid computing and distributed-data management.
